The English taught study programme International Communication and Media (ICM) is so special because of its truly international and intercultural focus on media and communication. ICM stands out for:
During your studies at HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht, you will often work in small, international project groups with students and staff from over seventy countries. In addition, you will have the opportunity to spend a semester or an internship abroad.
The study programme leads to a Bachelor's degree in Communication Systems. It aims at preparing you for international professional practice as communication and media professionals.
Always verify the dates on the programme website.
ICM consists of two phases: a common foundation and a main phase, in which students can specialize further in their area of interest.
Subjects include Consumer Behaviour, Diversity Skills, Digital Storytelling, Mass Communication, writing classes and you’ll be working on a project where you will make an Online Magazine.
The first year of ICM aims to provide students with core concepts and a solid basis in communication, (online) marketing, digital media, intercultural issues, journalistic writing skills, and of course research skills. These introductory courses intend to give an outline of the curriculum, and an indication of what to expect in the upcoming years.
In the third and fourth year competencies will be increased by means of the work placement abroad, studies abroad, courses on your chosen specialisation and the graduation assignment.
You will spend at least half a year in a non-native environment during a minor or your work placement. Dutch students have to spend at least half a year abroad; international students can choose to stay in The Netherlands.
For their work placement, students work as communication and media specialists at both the operational and strategic levels during a period of approximately 20 weeks. An assignment may consist, for example, of investigating positioning possibilities for Dutch soaps or media concepts on the American market. Or advising an organisation on the setting up and organisation of an online media campaign for a multinational toy manufacturer. Or preparing and organising an international conference for IT specialists. Work placements are often organised abroad.
For your graduation assignment you have to conduct your own research, in order to respond to a (marketing) communication or media problem of your choice.

1. (Senior) secondary school diploma with higher education entrance qualification
