Dr. Semiha Denktas, Head of the Social & Beahvioural Sciences Department at EUC, described her Department:
As a graduate of Erasmus University College with a Major in Social & Behavioural Sciences you will have a strong academic foundation and skills that employers find attractive.
We aim to educate you in the fields of society and human behaviour. This major allows you to learn how to do both theoretical and practical research. It will also stimulate you to use your newly obtained knowledge in a multidisciplinary fashion which is a crucial aspect of the Liberal Arts and Sciences education at Erasmus University College.
So, if you are intrigued by globalisation and international relations and wonder about how you can help to improve our society you will make the right choice when you Major in Social & Behavioural Sciences.
The same goes for if you wonder why the law plays a vital role in the society that you live in and if you are fascinated by the dynamics and consequences of social and ethnic inequality. Finally, if you ever pondered about why people are the way they are and you would like to know more about thinking, emotion, disorders and behaviour, the Major in Social & Behavioural Sciences might be just the thing for you.
If you decide to choose one of the Majors of the Social & Behavioural Sciences Department you will tackle some of the following courses:
A small-scale, intensive and residential approach to Liberal Arts & Sciences.
Erasmus University College (EUC) empowers students to face the challenges arising from an increasingly globalizing and interconnecting world, technological advances and environmental change.
For this we offer a Liberal Arts & Sciences programme, including multidisciplinary courses in four distinct Departments which are problem-based throughout. At the centre of this approach is our hallmark: tutored groups of 10 students.
To create a 24/7 academic environment we require EUC students to work and live at tailor-made facilities in the centre of Rotterdam. Extra-curricular activities are as much part of the programme as attending lectures and tutorials.
This new Bachelor programme started in September 2013.
Why Erasmus University College?

Students at Erasmus University College (EUC) study three years in order to graduate for their Bachelor Degree in Liberal Arts & Sciences.
During those three years you will take both mandatory Academic Core (ACC) courses to give you a solid foundation in knowledge and skills as well as declare a Major, while having the possibility to study for a semester abroad and choose a Minor. Finally, you will have to prove your mastery in an internship, a research project and/or a thesis. As such the path that each of our students follows in our curriculum will most likely be different to some extent.
Throughout their academic career, students will learn in an active environment. Most of the first year courses and a few year two and three follow a method a learning called Problem Based Learning. It is a problem-centered approach to active learning, which increases the motivation of the students and ignites a thorough interest in the subject matter.
You will learn in groups of 10, engaging in vivid discussions guided by a tutor and supported by a self-study. When this is not possible, case studies or other form of active and small-scaled learning will be used.
In year one you will take 12 courses in total, nine of which make up the Academic Core and three are up to you to choose. The Core is required for all students and is designed to impart essential academic knowledge regarding what every well educated student should know about life and society. The Core consists of four academic skills courses and five interdisciplinary courses.
The five interdisciplinary courses look at big themes through the lens of multiple disciplines:
The four mandatory skills courses will cover the topics:
Expect to work hard during this year, in order to gain broad knowledge and a useful skillset. Also, benefit from our extracurricular programme, with its rich offerings on Arts, Languages, Community Services, Sports and so on.
In your second and third year at EUC you deepen your knowledge in your preferred Department: Humanities, Social & Behavioural Sciences, Economics & Business or Life Sciences. Each of those Departments offer a wide range of Majors for you to pick from but also collaborate to offer unique interdepartmental Majors.
Within each Department, you combine specific interdisciplinary courses to make up a Major that really allows you to go in-depth. For example, in the Social & Behavioural Sciences you can choose from Sociology, International Law, Clinical Psychology, International Relations and much more.
In skills, you will have courses on Qualitative Research, Intermediate Statistics I and Intermediate Statistics II.
You will also choose a Minor which allow you to satisfy your additional interests. Besides the courses offered at EUC, you could attend courses offered at Erasmus University or even other universities through an exchange program.
Finally, you'll conclude your third year with the Capstone: a research project, an internship and/or a thesis.
You only need to take one of these language tests:
The IELTS – or the International English Language Test System – tests your English-language abilities (writing, listening, speaking, and reading) on a scale of 1.00–9.00. The minimum IELTS score requirement refers to which Overall Band Score you received, which is your combined average score. Read more about IELTS.Take IELTS test
The TOEFL – or Test Of English as a Foreign Language – offers an internet-based test (iBT). The final, overall iBT score ranges between 0 and 120, and includes a scaled average from the four components (reading, listening, speaking, and writing). Read more about TOEFL (iBT).
You are admissible to our programme if you have obtained or will obtain a VWO diploma or a foreign equivalent to the VWO diploma (for example, International Baccalaureate, European Baccalaureate, German Abitur, or British A Levels) with an average of 70% of the total grade . Additionally, since a number of our courses cover mathematics and statistics, mathematics proficiency is vital for success in our programme. Further, since our programme is completely taught in English, English language proficiency is a strict requirement.
