The University of Surrey was established on 9 September 1966 with the grant of its Royal Charter, but its roots go back to a late nineteenth-century concern to provide greater access to further and higher education for the poorer inhabitants of London.

In 2016, Surrey celebrated the 125th anniversary of its foundation.


The University of Surrey is structured into three faculties; The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS), The Faculty of Engineering and Physical Science (FEPS) and The Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences (FHMS).


At Surrey, our world-class researchers work together in a range of centres, groups, institutes, departments and other similar entities.

Our Research and Innovation Services team offer a range of services to academics to support then in the development of high quality research proposals and securing income, focussing on bid development, ethics and compliance and post-award project and programme management.

We also have a range of leading facilities and resources that allow us to conduct world-class research in a broad array of fields. These include those housed at Surrey Research Park, a major centre of excellence in technology, science, health and engineering.


Our on-campus Employability and Careers Centre is staffed by professional careers advisers who will help you to identify your skills and strengths and find the right opportunities.

Housing services

Whether you’re moving to the UK for the first time, or want the convenience of living within easy reach of academic facilities, Surrey offers a variety of accommodation for postgraduate students.

Arranged in Courts of Residence (groups of self-catered housing) and priced to suit different budgets, our accommodation has been designed to be comfortable and secure – so you’re free to focus on your studies and enjoy everything that Surrey has to offer.

Library services

The Library and Learning Centre is the academic hub of the University, sitting at the heart of our campus. In addition to the multi-million pound collections of online information resources which can be accessed seamlessly on or off campus, in the Library you can explore hundreds of thousands of books and journals as well as audio and image collections. The building provides a wide variety of learning spaces including silent rooms and social and group study areas, with bookable group study rooms for collaborative working.

ICT services

From 12pm on the 7th December, University IT will be taking pre-orders for the brand new ResNet Wi-Fi Access kits, which will give you wireless access in your room.

For just £15, you will be able to connect to the internet ALL your devices including laptops, smartphones, tablets and games consoles via secure wireless. You will have to buy the device but it is yours when you leave accommodation.

Medical services

There is an NHS Medical Practice (Guildowns), located in the Health Centre, University Court on Stag Hill campus.

The Royal Surrey County Hospital is located very close to the university, and includes an Accident & Emergency department.

Surrey Sports Park is one of Europe’s leading sports venues and the home of Team Surrey. If you’re into sport, the multi-million-pound centre will be a place you’ll love. University of Surrey students benefit from discounted membership of Surrey Sports Park, giving you access to facilities, classes and activities, and the opportunity to join sports clubs and represent Team Surrey.

Student clubs

The Students’ Union is and independent, membership-led charity and the sole representative body for Surrey students.

It offers clubs and societies, organises events, volunteering and training opportunities, and provides support and advice throughout your time at Surrey.

The Union is run by five full-time Sabbatical Officers who are elected by students.


Surrey Business School is accredited by both the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) and the Association of MBAs (AMBA).
