Queen's University Belfast has a record of academic achievement which stretches back more than 150 years. The University was made up of three Queen's Colleges - in Cork, Galway and Belfast. Although it was the first University in the north of Ireland, Queen's drew on a tradition of learning which goes back to 1810 and the foundation of the Belfast Academical Institution.

History

The UK's ninth oldest university, Queen's was founded as Queen’s College in 1845, and can trace its roots as far back as 1810.

With more 170 years of heritage, we combine an international reputation for academic excellence with a life-changing student experience and a culture of innovation.

Today there are approximately 23,000 from the UK and Ireland and more than 80 other countries.

Student services

The Student Guidance Centre is your first stop for information, advice and guidance throughout your time at Queen's University. From managing your student record, developing your academic and employability skills, and offering advice and assistance for times when you may feel under pressure, all services work together to help you have a successful, and hopefully enjoyable, student experience.

Library services

Queen’s have recently invested over £50m in the award winning McClay Library, blending the best features of a traditional library with the latest technology.

Facilities include computing and media services, IT training rooms, quiet study and group work areas, a cafe, a Language Centre and a vast range of printed works.

Campus life

Queen's is at the heart of Belfast's culture, as well as its art and social scenes. We're proud to be part of a bustling, cosmopolitan city boasting a vibrant social life and rich cultural heritage.

Our cutting-edge facilities include a financial Trading Room with Bloomberg terminals, interdisciplinary health and life sciences research facilities and innovative engineering hubs.

The Queen’s Graduate School is a dedicated social and academic space for postgraduate students. It was recently ranked 1st for Graduate Schools out of 159 international universities, (International Student Barometer survey, 2016).

Sports facilities

Queen’s is now one of the premier sporting universities in Ireland and the UK, (Guardian University Guide 2015).

Our sporting facilities include the Physical Education Centre, boasting two sports halls, advanced climbing walls, a 25m, 6 lane swimming pool, exercise studio’s, and much more.

Queen’s has heavily invested in its outdoor facilities, making Queen’s Sport a world-class centre of excellence in providing high performance training and competition facilities. The Arena Pitch and Clubhouse dominate the new facility, creating the perfect playing surfaces. The Boat House is home to both the Men's and Ladies' Boat Clubs, and two graduate rowing clubs.

Student clubs

Our Students’ Union, societies and clubs will help you to meet and make friends with other students and feel part of campus life.

Over 200 clubs and societies are a great way to meet friends, discover new talents, and get a break from studying. There’s a wide range to suit everyone including sport, gaming, creative, cultural, academic and charitable groups - or you can even start up your own if you'd like.

Our Degree Plus Programme, offers credit towards a Queen’s University if you help run a Club or Society.

The Global Study Awards

Together with the ISIC Association and British Council IELTS, StudyPortals offers you the chance to receive up to £10000 to expand your horizon and study abroad. We want to ultimately encourage you to study abroad in order to experience and explore new countries, cultures and languages.
