Roskilde University was formed under the Act of Copenhagen University's Siting and University Centres of 1970. The Act was passed only after a great deal of debate between the conservative-liberal coalition government in power at the time and the opposition. Roskilde University opened its doors to students, 723 of them, on 1 September 1972.
The education of the future is project and problem-oriented.
Future graduates from RUC will contribute to a society in which the creation of value and knowledge will be increasingly achieved through collaboration across businesses, organizations, government agencies, teams and individuals worldwide. This will require very specialised competencies. It is not sufficient that students acquire the highest level of expertise within their subject areas. They must also develop the ability to bring their academic knowledge effectively into play with others.
The University's research is organized into six Departments that are characterised by multi-disciplinary approaches across traditional discipline boundaries. The research has a special focus on responding to societal needs for knowledge and addressing complex issues in more holistic ways than is typically the case with traditional single disciplinarity.

There are 4 kinds of university accommodations:
Roskilde University library (RUb) is located just off the RU main entrance and is built as an open, bright and welcoming library space. RUb is specially designed to be a workspace for students and staff at the Roskilde University - and in the best possible way accompany them in their studies.
RUC is a meeting place where you become part of a strong community. It is a campus where ideas and free thinking are brought into play in the dialogue between people with different perspectives and nationalities. An interdisciplinary approach and project work immerses the students in social and professional contexts that form lasting ties.
The culture at RUC is therefore characterised by a high degree of openness and room for many different positions. The core of RUC's culture is freedom of thought, democracy and tolerance.
